Thomas MAHAR
A Terrible Accident
Thomas Mahar, one of the oldest
residents of the town of Exeter, met with a horrible accident Friday morning,
which resulted in his death a short time later. Mr. Mahar, who had
moved back on the farm from Dayton, ascended the windmill tower to make
some repairs on the machinery, and while standing on the platform 50 feet
from the ground the big wheel suddenly whirled around, throwing him off.
The force with which he stuck the ground mangled him in a terrible manner.
He lived about four hours afterwards, regaining consciousness for a short
time before he died.

Surname: Martin
Died-At Mendota, March 19, 1894,
W.H. Martin, aged 35 years, 1 month and 26 days. William H. Martin,
youngest son of Mr. And Mrs. William Martin of this village, was born in
the town of Brooklyn Jan. 23, 1850 and lived with his parents until July
20, 1878 when, in company with a friend, he went to Minnesota with the
intention of remaining only during the harvest season, but, it seems, changed
his mind while there and determined to see more of the world. He
engaged in the occupation of a lineman, which he followed successfully
until some time last year when he met with an accident at Pittsburgh, Pa.,
while adjusting a wire, falling a distance of 35 feet, nearly causing his
death and resulting in injuries from which he never entirely recovered.
From there he went with a friend, Charles Phillips, to Covington, Ky.,
at which place his mind began to fail. He was advised to return home,
which he did, arriving in Albany May 20, 1893. He was very anxious
to commence medical treatment and was taken to Mendota. Hopes of
his recovery were entertained up to Friday, March 16, when he met with
a second accident, falling from a roof to the ground a distance of 30 feet,
receiving internal injuries which resulted in his death the following Monday.
The remains were brought to his home and were interred Wednesday in the
Catholic cemetery. A source of great consolation to his sorrowing
parents and sister and brother who are left to mourn their loss, is a letter
from a young man who has followed the same occupation and was with him
continually for the past nine years, telling of the purity of his life,
his temperate habits and regular attendance at the church of which he was
a member, and the good name which followed him everywhere and which remained
unsullied through all his wanderings.

About 12 years ago she experienced religion, and has since been a consistent

Mrs. Sarah A. Morton was
born in Virginia May 4, 1826 and died in Albany, Wisconsin August 25, 1895
aged a little more than 69 years. She was married Sept. 22, 1847
to Lewis Morton, when they came to Wisconsin, settling on the farm in the
town of Mt. Pleasant six miles west of Albany, where they spent 39 years
and saw their children grow up around them. Eight children were born
to them, four sons and four daughters. One of the daughters has gone
before her mother into the silent land, but the rest of the children survive
to cherish the memory of the mother whose loss they deeply deplore.
Nine years ago Mr. And Mrs. Morton moved into Albany to spend a peaceful
old age, but five years ago Mr. Morton was called away at the age of 69.
Years ago both she and Mr. Morton experienced religion and united with
the Adventist church and she exemplified in her daily walk the religion
she professed. Her children will miss her but they will rejoice that
she is safe home at last. The memory of the years of tender, loving
care bestowed on each one of them is among the choicest memories of her
children today. The surviving children were all present at the funeral,
which was held on Tuesday, August 27, from the Baptist church, conducted
by the pastor.

Mr. Alexander Murrey, whose death
occurred March 1, 1890, after a sickness of 6 months, was born in Erie
Co., NY Feb. 24, 1818. In 1832 he removed to Michigan and located
in Hillsdale Co. Here he married Laura Wright of the same county
where he lived. Three children were born to them in their Michigan
home. Deceased came to Wisconsin in 1846 and secured a farm about
half way between Brodhead and Albany where for a number of years he made
his home. Here seven other children were born to them. The
wife died in 1862 on the 17th day of Feb. In 1878 he was married
to the wife who now survives him. In September, 1887 they left the
labor of the farm and came to Brodhead for a home. The summer of
1888 they built a comfortable house where they have since resided.
The deceased was a member of the Grange for about 16 years, most of the
time holding an important position in the order. He was held in high
esteem by his neighbors, and entrusted by them with some of the important
positions in the administration of the town. About 1854 he made a
profession of religion and with his wife joined the United Brethren Church.
In his last sickness returning faith in God took the place of doubts and
questionings which had found a place in his heart. He expressed a
strong hope in the Savior and confidence in His love. After long
suffering he quietly passed away, surrounded by his loved ones. Of
the 10 children, 7 are still living, and these all came from their homes
to be present at the funeral. This was held in the Baptist Church
and conducted by the pastor, the choir singing some of the old hymns which
the deceased had loved while living. His remains were laid away under
the snow, but we believe that he has gone to be with the Divine Father
