Cordelia L. WALLING
Surnames: Walling, Morgan
Cordelia L. Walling was born in Charlotte, Vermont Sept. 14, 1824.  She came with her parents to Ohio on 1842.  On March 28, 1845 she was married to Daniel H. Morgan and in October, 1852, came with her husband and two children to Green Co., Wis., where she has sine resided.  She died at her home in Mt. Pleasant March 18, 1890, where she had lived for the past 32 years.  Owing to the dangerous illness of a sister, there was no service at the house.  Kind friends gathered at the cemetery to which the form was carefully borne by her sons and sons-in-law.  An appropriate hymn was sung by her life long friends, the Whitcomb brothers, after which Mrs. T.L. Summeril, of Monroe, read words which she had been requested to prepare for the occasion  NOTE:  This is a very long tribute of the deceased character and is not reproduced here.

Surname: Warren
Died at Las Vegas, New Mexico, Feb. 18, 1894, Charles A. Warren, aged 21 years, 9 months and 6 days.  He was born in Albany Wis., May 12, 1872.  He was educated here with the exception of two years at Madison and Janesville.  At the age of seventeen he entered the railway mail service.  After four years of constant study and hard work his health failed.  Not improving after a six months’ leave of absence, he resigned.  Everything that could be was done for him, and in the warm climate of New Mexico he seemed to improve, until attached with the grippe.  In a few short weeks it had done its work—and as the bright sun disappeared behind the western mountains his young and bright soul took its flight, leaving his father and mother the sad duty of taking the remains of their only boy to their Wisconsin home.  Only a few hours before his death he had said:  “let us go home tomorrow”.  Through his last sickness his mother has been his constant attendant, giving him that care no one but a mother can give.  He was noble and good and respected by all.  His remains arrived Wednesday evening and the funeral services were held at the family residence Thursday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Jos Mountain.  Many beautiful floral tributes were laid upon the casket, among them a guitar made of rare flowers, a remembrance from the young people.  The remains were laid at rest in the family vault of Dr. Nichols, where they will remain for the present.

Dr. John Holden WARREN
Born Aug 23, 1825
Died Aug. 1, 1901
Dr. J. H. Warren, a pioneer resident of this state, a former state senator and for many years prominent in the business and political life of this county and of the state, died at Palmyra Springs Thursday morning of cerebral embolism.  He had been a sufferer from nervous trouble for the past ten years.  His death was sudden, he having retired in usual health Wednesday night, after enjoying a day’s visit with Stanley B. Smith and wife of Janesville.

John H. Warren was 76 years of age.  He was born at Hogansburg, Franklin County, NY, August 23, 1825.  He was of a splendid family, his grandfather served in the Revolutionary War and his father, a descendant of the New England Warrens, was a soldier in the war of 1812.  John Warren came west when he was a young boy and came direct to Rock County.  He came by the way of Johnstown and settled at La Prairie.  In 1838 he came to Janesville and attended the first school taught there.

At the age of twenty he studied medicine with Dr. Nichols of Janesville and afterwards with Dr. Dyer of Chicago; graduating with honors from Rush Medical College in 1849.  He was the last surviving member of his class, and also the last living senator of those early days.  Dr. Warren began the practice of medicine at Lodi, where he resided until 1851, when he removed to Albany and followed the milling and mercantile business with much success.  He was elected to the state senate in 1857 and served for five years, winning honorable distinction as a statesman.  In 1862 he was appointed by Abraham Lincoln as collector of internal revenue, an office he held for seven years.  He was also appointed receiver of commutation by Secretary Stanton during the rebellion.

He was a stockholder and director in the Sugar River Valley Railroad and was for many years the largest mail contractor in the U.S., having over 100 mail routes and being president and general manager of the Western State Co., his business taking him to all of the remote places in the country, giving him unusual opportunities to study the character of the Indians; and in early days he was one of the strongest advocates of a peace policy towards them.  He was for several years vice president of the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society and an enthusiastic worker for the success of that society.

He gave to Albany in its infancy his best efforts.  In 1880 he worked with untiring efforts to build the Sugar River Valley Railroad, making many trips to Milwaukee and New York conferring with the officials, laboring unceasingly until the railroad was completed.  He always had the best interests of Albany at heart and was ever ready to assist in promoting the interests of the town.

In 1879 he removed with his family to Janesville, where he resided until 1891, when he removed to Milwaukee.  Throughout his public life he gained a reputation for enterprise, coupled with that more commendable and rarer element, sterling integrity, which served to give him a prominent position among the representative men of the state.  In politics he was a republican, having been a Whig in early days.  He was always a firm believer and zealous worker in the cause of temperance.

Dr. Warren was loving and indulgent as a husband and father.  He was ever ready with money or influence to help those needy and worth of assistance.

He was reared under Presbyterian influences, and although not connected with any church organization was a firm believer in the principles of Christianity and always adhered to the doctrine taught him by his mother.  His life was a grand sermon in itself.

His remains were brought to Albany Saturday morning and placed in the family vault.  After the Episcopal services were conducted by Rev. A. H. Barrington of Christ Church, Janesville, the beautiful Masonic services were conducted by Albany Lodge Number 36, of which deceased was a charter member and former Master, assisted by the Brodhead lodge.

Dr. Warren leaves a wife, three daughters, Julia, Gertrude and Louise, and two sons, Dr. Herbert N. and Dr. Benjamin H. Warren; two daughters, Elizabeth and Fannie, having preceded him to the world unknown.  Dr. Warren’s bounty and integrity was rewarded with success in his business ventures and he leaves a valuable estate.
