The pieces in
this exhibition are a mix of hats found in 1992 in far western China (in
and around Urumqi, Kashgar, and Hotan in the Xinjian Uyghur Autonomous Region),
hats and garments purchased in 1999 across the Central Asian countries of
Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan, and embroidered pieces and felted
dolls purchased since then from artisans who have travelled to the Folk
Art Market held every year in July at the Museum of International Folk Art
in Santa Fe, New Mexico. |

Some of the hats (those from
western China) were purchased new in local markets and were what was being
worn at the time. Others, those from Central Asia, I found in museum
shops or in antique or carpet shops. The large embroidered coat was
found at the Sunday market in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. There is no
particular focus to the treasures I collect other than that I love textiles,
color, pattern and value the artistry and skill found in cultures the world
around. . . . . Rae |
